This week it's a "Saturday Freebie"

Saturday Freebie just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Haha. Oh well!

In anticipation of my full Jellyfish coloring book release, I want to give you a page for free. Color it, frame it, post it on the refrigerator, whatever…just have some fun and show me the end result. Either post it in your Instagram stories and tag me in it @LindsayElizabethArt or show the whole world in a REAL post using hashtag #ColorwaterStudio.

Will it be a mom and kiddo collaboration? Does dad want to unwind with some coloring at the end of the night? (I just chuckled as I wrote that but you never know). :)

My Favorite Art Supplies

Did you attend a recent workshop of mine? Are you planning to? Did you buy my ebook but want some other information on recommended supplies? Do you simply want to treat yourself to some new supplies as you explore a new skill with me? Do you have an art-loving kiddo who would LOVE quality supplies for his or her birthday? If so, post is for you. I have highlighted just a few (BUT THE MOST IMPORTANT) supplies that I use each and every day. I’m particularly fond of the watercolor pens. If you’re new to the world of watercolor OR like to venture out of the box from time to time, these are most definitely for you.

  • Kuretake Watercolor Paint - 36 Colors. If you aren’t ready to experiment with liquid watercolors (I do think liquids are a bit more advanced), this set is DA BOMB! The colors are vibrant, it lasts FOREVER so the price point is unreal for what you can get out of it. I highly recommend this product for any skill level and I use it every. single. day.

  • Arteza Watercolor Pens - 24 count, 48 count, 96 count. I could not be more in love with these pens. Of course, I like to experiment with new materials from time to time. I think long time watercolor artists might cringe at this new and innovative take on such a timeless medium but I LOVE THEM!

These florals were created using only these pens! Unbelievable if you ask me.

IMG_4855.JPG
  • Canson Watercolor Paper - This particular size is perfect because I can get one 8x10 and two 5x7s out of one sheet. I paint rather small most of the time so it’s perfect for exploring the process, gift giving, and finding affordable frames.

  • Watercolor Brushes - You don’t need a wide variety. You truly need a large, medium, and small brush to take care of. Start with these.

  • If I’m not framing my work for a client, I’m definitely going to mat and package it for them so they can choose their own frame. (If I didn’t mat yours and you’re a client of mine I’M SORRY…I promise I will in the future. :) These are great because they come with sturdy backings AND bags. If you plan to sell originals at a vendor event, give a homemade gift, or simply store safely, these are perfect! You don’t always have to frame an original piece of artwork for it to sell. Some people like to pick out their own frames.

If you purchase any of these supplies let me know how you like them! They are affiliate links so I actually get a small commission from each sale. I would NEVER IN A MILLION YEARS endorse a product I didn’t already have success with and/or use on a daily basis. If I’m going to whole-heartedly recommend them to you why not get paid for it right? You can find each one of these in my studio right now. I’d take a picture to prove it but you don’t want to see that disaster at the moment. Mama needs to find some time to spark joy in that space.

Fresh Oyster Release this Saturday!

Are you an oyster fan? You don’t have to like to eat them to appreciate their beauty. I’ve taken unnatural and unique color schemes and redefined my interpretation of an oyster. What do you think?

I will be at McClintock Distillery this Saturday from 2-4 with several framed, matted, and large canvas pieces for your home. Juuuust in time for Valentines Day too!

A creativity exercise for you.

Dear Moms, Dads, Creatives, Students, anyone and everyone, :)

This freebie is for you. Creativity is often a struggle. I’ve heard “I’m not creative” more than you will ever know in the past ten years of teaching all ages. Well, I don’t believe you. Anyone can exercise their creativity just like you exercise to build muscle. So lets try it!

Download and print “Square Art” below. Have some fun with your kids, with your husband/wife, or by yourself. Don't think too hard…just CREATE! For more experienced artists who are having a creative block, you could use this square format to brainstorm a variety of compositions or just doodle while your creative brain comes back to life. Ha! I do something similar quite often.

I’m also hosting a five-day “Creativity Challenge” in February. There will be prizes at the end! Stay tuned for more information about that!

A motivational freebie for you!

We all have excuses don’t we? Even though we don’t like to admit it. Usually it’s not enough time, we aren’t talented enough, we lack knowledge, someone out there has already done it, … do I need to keep going? You already know what your excuses are. Going forward, let’s choose to ignore them!

Download this free iPhone wallpaper, look at it everyday and decide. What am I going to GO FOR today? Tomorrow? The next day? Am I going to let my excuses or my fears get the best of me?

You are in control of your life and what you make of it.

Always dream big and…

BE THE ONE WHO DECIDED TO GO FOR IT!

Want to learn a new skill this year?

Well, I don’t know if you know me but I LOVE TO TEACH! So I think we are a match made in heaven don’t you? I read somewhere (I wish I could find the email so I can give credit where credit is due) that one of the most popular new years resolutions is to learn a new skill. This is fantastic! I agree, but when do we have time in our busy schedules to take time for ourselves when we are also trying to work out, prepare healthy meals, work, housework, spend time with family, etc. so hear me out…I have an idea…

Lets combine two of those things I just listed. That’s a start right? Doing something for yourself (aka learning this new skill) AND spending time with your family. Win win my friends!

Art can be an intimidating new skill to learn. Maybe you had a bad art experience in school, maybe you compare your skill level to others, maybe you don’t think you have a single creative bone in your body…well, I’m here to show you that ART IS FUN! It’s about enjoying the art-making process and enjoying the process with your families.

IMG_5161.JPG

Here’s the deal. I’m in the process of developing a series of creative projects for you to learn and do WITH your family, especially your little ones. My ebook that’s coming out on January 28th has five watercolor projects perfect for your entire family. It also provides the basic information to learn more about watercolor painting.

Why did I choose watercolor? Because honestly, it’s affordable, it’s easy to travel with, it doesn’t stain (at least I’ve never had a stain stick around), and it lasts a loooong time if you use it correctly. It’s easy for younger kids to use as well and they often use it early in elementary school so you might find that they are more experienced than you are. Ha!

Not only is my ebook perfect for someone who wants to try something new, I’m also holding a week long (five days) “Creativity Challenge” at the beginning of February. This one is totally free but completely different than the ebook. It will be about challenging yourself and your family to get creative through drawing, coloring, conversation and maybe even some "get up and out of your seat” activities.

I’m giving everyone on my email list a discount code for my ebook and you will be the first to know about dates for the creativity challenge so subscribe below!

Why host an art event??? With me.

Why host an in-home (or destination) art event?

You can hang out with me! If that right there isn’t enough please continue reading. **wink**
First of all, you may be asking yourself “What does she mean by an art event?” Well, to put it simply, I have a gazillion art project ideas, experience in just about every art medium there is, and a serious passion for teaching. See the event menu below. Don’t think of this as your average paint night!

  1. What do I mean by “in-home” event? You will invite friends/family/coworkers to your home for a unique and incredibly fun gathering. Celebrating something? I’ll bring the pARTy to you.

  2. What do I mean by a destination event? If you don’t want to host in your home, there are plenty of local places that charge a minimal rental fee. Fire halls, community spaces, schools, restaurants, etc.

  3. What types of events or gatherings would be conducive to art-making? Any really! A casual Friday night, a holiday gathering (I will theme the artwork being created), fundraisers, team-building, girl’s nights, maybe even switch up your game night (I would be happy initiate a little friendly competition by bringing trivia or pictionary to play while we’re letting our work dry).

  4. Do you have a cause you’d like to support? I’m a huge fan of supporting the community through school fundraisers, local organizations, etc. For example, school fundraisers are hugely successful. I’ve been teaching for 10 years so I promise to engage your whole audience. This can be a yearly event (or more often if you’d like) and a great money maker for your cause.

  5. It’s something different! My art events are NO LONGER your average paint night. The events I’m speaking of are more like workshops or classes, where everyone can produce something different, explore their interests, and walk away with a masterpiece...and maybe a new hobby. Will I create something step by step for those a little scared of what I just said? Yes. But if I can teach these things to middle school students I can certainly make sure you are successful too.

  6. Speaking of which...birthday parties! Gather a group of friends and host one of my creative events. I will work with the birthday boy or girl (and mom or dad of course) to make sure the project is something him/her and their friends would enjoy. You can do one of two things. As the host and parent, you can pay a special group price or ask the attendees to pay a portion instead of bringing gifts (or cards...I mean, those things are like $5 at hallmark now). Jeesh. Totally 100% up to you as the host of a party. We can chat about that later.

  7. Men AND women can participate. I will modify subject matter accordingly.

  8. All supplies are included. You just need to sit down and enjoy. Maybe grab a beverage or snack first.

  9. Let’s continue our creative relationship after the event. I hope you will continue to follow me on social media. Ask me questions, attend other local events I will be hosting, or just email me! We can even set up personal lessons for anyone in your family. Need recommendations on supplies? Some advice on subject matter? I got you!

  10. If you’ve ever said “I can’t draw” or “I have zero artistic ability” I will change your opinion if it’s the last thing I do!

  11. You really don’t have to plan anything. I do it all for you. All you need to provide is the location, seating, and food/drink if you choose to do so. From my experience, less is best. Your artist attendees will be so focused on their work they won’t have time to eat a full spread. :)

I can’t wait to get you on the books for 2019. Email me directly at LindsayElizabethArt@gmail.com to start the process of planning your perfect event.

If you’d like to attend an event before committing to host one, we have a few more seats open at Olde Mother on January 30th from 6-8. Register HERE…and SOON if you’re interested.

18 Great things about 2018

2018 was pretty stinkin’ awesome. For these reasons…

  1. I GOT MARRIED! I’m Mrs. Anderson. :)

  2. Kai turned 1.

  3. We went on a Disney cruise with the little man for our honeymoon. After a weekend in St. Michaels by ourselves of course. Kai loves everything about Mickey and friends.

  4. Kai started walking and saying Mommy, Daddy, Big Truck, Dog Dog, and a bunch of other baby words that I actually understand.

  5. We spent two amazing weeks in Sunset Beach, NC. The. best. beach. for a kiddo. Hands down.

  6. I made an extremely positive lifestyle change this past summer. Intermittent fasting.

  7. I participated in three successful art shows…St. Peters in Lewes, DE, Ocean Pines, and OldeMother Brewery in Frederick.

  8. My work was in five art exhibits in Maryland.

  9. My students this year were the most inspiring, talented AND challenging. For that, I am a better teacher. They are everything. I can’t wait to get back into the classroom. @ArtfulAnderson on Twitter.

  10. I was lucky enough to be selected for a four month artist residency with ArtFarm in Annapolis. Prime location, retail space, workshops, and more. It was a fantastic learning experience.

  11. I established a creative relationship with Anchors & Oars (you need to go shop there, it’s unreal), in Grasonville, MD.

  12. We sold our house in Annapolis and moved back to Frederick. New Market to be exact. Home sweet home.

  13. Started a business relationship with Hipsley Collective in Mt. Airy, MD.

  14. I discovered Adobe Spark. Life changing.

  15. Officially painted 25 pet portraits this year.

  16. Colorwater Studio was born (more info to come).

  17. Started listening to podcasts, and again….Life changing.

  18. I started an online community “Frederick Creatives” to network, share resources, and grow our local businesses together. I’m incredibly excited about where this can take all who are involved.

Short, sweet, and a GREAT year. If you’d like to know more about ANY of the above 18, leave it in the comments. :)

What am I working on?

Today I decided to go all in on colored pencil jellyfish. I brought my Prismacolors home from my classroom sharpened them up and went to town. :) I sometimes forget that drawing is so satisfying because it takes you back to the basics. Oh, and very little mess which is great because the rest of my studio is a toddler disaster from the holidays. My 21 month old and I share a work space. Ha! It’s pretty cool because I get to watch all the old school Disney movies on VHS while I work. Disclaimer: I still have to fast forward the part in the Lion King where Mufasa dies. Can’t. Handle. It.
